The price of a hotel room in Glasgow rose 16% last year, according to new figures.

But the city's hotels are still among the cheapest in the country, at an average price of £75 a room.

The figures from Hotel.com revealed that the UK average for a room was £98.

And other Scottish cities are more expensive than Glasgow.

In Aberdeen, visitors can expect to fork out as much as £91 while the average price for a room in Edinburgh is £95.

The Glasgow room rate was similar to Bournemouth and Bristol and Midlands cities including Birmingham and Coventry.

The highest average room price in the UK was £114 in Bath, while the highest in Europe was Moscow at £172.

A spokesman for VisitScotland said: "Although cost is important it is not a major deterrent for people who wish to enjoy a holiday in Scotland.

"There is a range of accommodation available, from high-quality hostels and B&Bs to luxury boutique hotels.

"Our research shows quality and service are important to visitors to Scotland and that cost is not the only factor when choosing a destination."

Hotels.com marketing director Patrick Oqvist said: "The UK remained the most expensive country in Europe last year, showing the rising popularity of our cities as tourist destinations."
