BURNLEY and Nelson have again been named as having some of the cheapest homes in the country.

In a list of the top 20 cheapest streets, nine are in the two boroughs.

And Oxford Street in Nelson was rated as the second cheapest in the UK, with an average price of £21,888.

Compiled by the mouseprice.com website, which re-sells Land Register information to would-be buyers, the list is based on Land Registry sales figures since 2000, and shows a clear North South divide, with all the cheapest houses being found in the North.

Despite a booming property market in recent years, there are still properties selling for less than £30,000.

The cheapest street in England and Wales has been identified as Tower Green in Middlesbrough, where houses sell for an average of just £21,290.

According to the website, the number of cheap houses in Nelson and Burnley can be attributed to widespread compulsory purchase and demolition of very old houses as part of government-inspired "regeneration" plans, and depressed prices due to "right to buy" sales.

The East Lancashire streets named were Craven Street, Nelson, and North Street, Athol Street North, Duckett Street, Howsin Street, Brush Street, Cameron Street and Hargher Street, Burnley.
