THE VUE cinema at Pilsworth is to close within the next few years.
But a new 10-screen multiplex cinema run by the same company will be built on The Rock in Bury.
The cinema will form part of the £220m regeneration of the area known as The Rock Triangle, which is being developed by Thornfield Properties in partnership with Bury Council.
As well as a Debenhams store, the site will also include a bowling alley, 60 shop units, 200 new homes, cafes and restaurants.
It is expected the Rock Triangle development will be completed in 2009, although no firm details of when the Pilsworth cinema would shut down have been released.
A spokesman for Vue Entertainment, which owns 59 cinemas nationwide, told the Bury Times: "I can assure you Vue is not leaving Bury. Vue is committed to Bury, and nobody will lose out.
"The Vue cinema will be upgraded to a brand new 10-screen cinema on The Rock."
Vue took over the cinema from Warner Brothers in 2004, having first opened on the Park 66 complex in June 1989.
Motorists, bus passengers and pedestrians all face delays for the rest of the year, especially along Rochdale Road and Moorgate.
The first task is to divert utilities, starting with British Telecom which is laying new ducts between Rochdale Road and Angouleme Way, causing lane closures and diversions. Gas pipes and electric cables will also be moved which, with a new water main, will mean substantial excavations.
A new link road from Rochdale Road to Moorgate will be built, and the large roundabout next to the Halfords store will be removed.
