DETECTIVES probing assaults on a man and woman in Tonge Moor have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers have made five arrests in total in connection with the incident in Huntroyde Avenue on Saturday, March 14.

A 42-year-old man suffered a head injury and remains at Salford Royal Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 23-year-old woman has left hospital, but suffered bruising, swelling and cuts to her face and head.

Emergency services had been called to the scene at about 6.55am.

Police have now arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and a section 47 assault and he remains in custody for questioning.

They are also quizzing a 43-year-old man who has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice and remains in custody for questioning.

Two women, aged 25 and 22, and a 23-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Det Insp Charlotte Cadden said: “Although we have made arrests, we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have information in relation to the assault.

The man in hospital is believed to have lived in Huntroyde Avenue for three to four years, and has a son who no longer lives with him.

It was previously reported how police were stepping up their search for a man they wanted to speak to, while it is understood that the victim and attacker are known to each other.
