PROMOTERS of one of East Lancashire’s most popular charity runs are hoping the latest leg will notch up another personal best for 2015.

Last year, 2,500 people entered the Jane Tomlinson Pennine Lancashire 10km event. The entry was up by more than 1,000 on 2013 and garnered thousands of pounds for good causes. It is hoped that this year’s entry will be the biggest yet.

Organisers of the race, backed by the Asda Foundation, enlisted the support of a football dynamo who knows more about mileage than most.

Clarets winger George Boyd has covered more ground during this Premier League term than any other player in the country — including clocking up more than 13.3km in last November’s clash with Stoke City alone.

The trek around Burnley, slated for June 28, is the fourth time the Jane Tomlinson run has been staged in East Lancashire, the inaugural event being held in Blackburn.

George said: “It is inspiring that so many people turn out to run to raise money for some excellent charities. I am sure June 28 will be a great day for everyone involved and I wish all the runners good luck.”

Club bosses are assembling a 30-strong squad — representing the Clarets In The Community Trust, which is based at Turf Moor — for the course.

Once again the route will take participants through Thompson Park, around Rowley Lake and back across Towneley Park, with several water stations en route.

Siobhan Curtis, legacy manager at the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, said: “The Pennine Lancashire 10km is one of the most popular fundraising events in the region.

“We are looking forward to seeing the appeal team hitting the streets in June.”

Official partners for the race include Pendleside Hospice, Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley, Macmillan Cancer Support, Shine and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Julie Ward, of the Asda Foundation, said: “It is encouraging to see the way in which the race is growing in popularity. We are proud to be associated with it.”
