HEALTH bosses are advising students not to turn up at A&E if they have minor illnesses like 'fresher's flu.'

NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are reminding people to keep A&E free for those who really need it as well as raising awareness of the alternatives.

A spokesman for the CCG said: " So, whether it’s ‘freshers flu’, a hangover, or a sporting injury, students are being encouraged to swot up on their local health services and get the right answer when their knowledge is put to the test!

"‘Self care’ is the best choice for many minor illnesses and injuries. For a nasty bout of ‘freshers flu’ — a cold — this would mean rest, paracetamol, and plenty of water.

"Keeping a few basic medicines to hand can be really useful – just in case. Bolton’s local pharmacies are a great place to go for expert advice and over the counter medicines. Pharmacists are available without an appointment, so it’s quick and easy to pop in between lectures."

The spokesman said GPs are highly skilled in treating ongoing health conditions, such as diabetes or asthma, and have access to a patient’s full medical records.

All students are advised to register with a GP practice so they can receive emergency care if they need it and access health services quickly and easily.

Dr Barry Silvert, Clinical Director for Commissioning at NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We have all heard about the recent pressures on A&E departments nationally.

"A major factor behind this is the number of frail elderly patients with serious and complex health conditions who need to be in hospital.

"The CCG is calling on Bolton’s students to do the right thing, as it is now more important than ever to keep A&E for those who need it. University is a busy time and I know this will not be a priority for many of our town’s students, but why spend time waiting in A&E when you would have been better off going somewhere else? Let’s make it better Bolton!”

The Better Bolton campaign will continue over the coming months. For more information on alternatives to A&E, students should visit www.letsmakeitbolton.co.uk.
