Insp Winter said: “We have had four or five traffic accidents along Stopes Brow already this morning, it seems particularly dangerous. I would urge people to drive with caution wherever they are.

“Overnight we also had a vehicle crash and embed itself in a wall in Glen View Road, Burnley.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council said there had been a crash near The Hindle Arms, where Stopes Brow meets Rakes Bridge.

A police spokesman said there was a four-car collision at 7.20am which resulted in no injuries.

“The road was totally blocked at one stage, with a bus trying to get past also causing problems. No-one needed ambulance treatment and all drivers and passengers were out of their vehicles when police arrived.

“The gritters have been called and the road re-opened just before 8am, so traffic is still busy there, with some vehicles slipping and bumping into others.

“Our officers have also mentioned treacherous conditions in Burnley overnight.”

Two fire engines are currently at the scene of a ‘serious incident’ in Gib Lane, Feniscowles, where one resident reported an overturned car.
