A 37-YEAR-OLD Blackburn man has appeared before the town’s magistrates charged in connection with an alleged tax scam on a company based in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Blackburn magistrates heard the company had been contacted by someone purporting to be collecting a debt on behalf of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs who demanded immediate payment of over £7,000.

The money was paid into a bank account and quickly withdrawn, before the company was able to stop the payment having been informed that HMRC had not requested it.

Daniel David Fletcher, 37, of Bombay Street, Blackburn, pleaded not guilty to possessing criminal property, £7,218 which went through his bank account. He was sent to Preston Crown Court where he will appear on April 13.

Debbie Morgan, defending, said her client had been approached by a man he knew bought and sold cars who had asked if he could use his bank account for a payment.
