A DOCTOR has gone the "extra mile" for Bury Cancer Support Centre - or 920 to be precise.

For that's the distance Dr Paul Norman completed during a 10-day marathon bike ride between Land's End and John O'Groats.

Now, thanks to his gruelling journey, he has presented £4,000 to Bury Cancer Support Centre which recently transferred to a new base in the town's Bolton Road.

Dr Norman, aged 48, who works at the Minden Family Practices at the Moorgate Primary Care Centre, undertook the bike ride with his brother Dave.

He said; "Both of us are keen amateur cyclists. We decided to cycle between Land's End and John O'Groats because it was a really good challenge and the fact it gave us an opportunity to raise money for charity.

" Bury Cancer Support Centre is a local charity and has new premises. And it was appropriate my patients contributed to something as important as the centre which doesn't receive any NHS funding."

Dr Norman, who was sponsored by patients, family, friends and companies, added: "I struggled with saddle sores for a couple of days but managed to get through it. We were blessed with ver y good weather. but we did also get the usual soaking."
