GIANT snowmen will help kick-start the festive season in Bolton as they join in the Big Christmas Switch-On.

The 8ft 6in figures are back for their 21st parade to entertain the crowds and help bring some festive cheer.

The six snowmen made their first outing back in 1993, and over the years have been patched up after various accidents, which include lost buttons, a 'nose job' and stiching-up following some tricky curb mounting.

Leader of Bolton Council Cllr Cliff Morris was on hand when they were first delivered to Bolton in a truck more than 20 years ago — and said since then they have become a firm favourites with families and visitors to the annual switch-on event.

He said: “I remember their first appearance in 1993 and they have become an integral part of Christmas in Bolton. We had them commissioned by a theatre set designer for a reasonable sum of £1,000, and they have certainly stood the test of time.

“Since then we’ve had all sorts of characters in the parade, such as a king, a Rudolph reindeer and even a giant mince pie, but the snowmen have been with us throughout and I’m sure they could see us through another 21 years if they had to.

“They’re very durable, although we have experienced some mishaps over the years.

“This year, we’re proud to also welcome the Bolton Majorettes, Eagley Brass Band and the Dance Masters cheerleaders group to the festive parade, and we’re looking forward to a fantastic night on Thursday.”

The Christmas parade including the six snowmen will leave Churchgate at 6.25pm on Thursday, arriving in the square at 6.45pm.

CBeebies star Katy Ashworth will help switch on Bolton’s Christmas lights alongside Father Christmas and the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Martin Donaghy at 7pm.

Meanwhile singers and dancers will entertain the crowds in Victoria Square from 5pm.

This year's Winter Wonderland in Bolton town centre will be open from November 29, which will include a giant 50m snow slide and traditional open air ice rink,

A huge Ferris wheel will also be open fromDecember 11.
