EDUCATING people about the right stuff in the right bins has netted Recycle for Greater Manchester a green campaign of the year award.

The organisation won the Sustainable/Green marketing campaign of the year award at the Northern Marketing Awards, for their Right Stuff Right Bin campaign.

During bin collections, council crews either left a green ‘Right stuff, Right bin’ tag on bins that contain the correct items, thanking residents for recycling correctly or a red ‘Wrong stuff, Wrong bin’ tag if they recycled incorrectly. This was supported with community door-knocking, events and local advertising.

The judges felt that this was: “the stand-out campaign in its category with the client and agency clearly working well together. The campaign was well structured and thorough and delivered fantastic results”

As a result of the campaign, there was a 61per cent reduction in the amount of the incorrect items put in the mixed recycling bin and the recycling rate increased by 49 per cent. The campaign also achieved more than £20,000 "disposal cost savings " between September and November 2013.

Councillor Elaine Sherrington, Chairman of the Behaviour Change Strategy Committee, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, and local councillor said: “ Due to the success of the pilot campaign in achieving our aims of increasing recycling and raising awareness of putting the right stuff in the right bin, we have rolled it out to several other areas in Greater Manchester.”
