CONTROVERSIAL plans to move Accrington bus station to speed up public transport in East Lancashire, have been passed.

The proposal to site the new £6.4 million complex in Crawshaw Street rather than the current Peel Street site angered local traders.

They protested to local government secretary Eric Pickles who ordered a public inquiry in June.

Last night Lancashire County Council transport boss John Fillis revealed the cabinet minister had approved the compulsory purchase order needed for the move to go ahead.

Work on site is expected to begin in early 2015 with completion in April 2016.

Coun John Fillis said: “I'm pleased at the decision.”

Hyndburn council leader Miles Parkinson said: “This is fantastic news for the town.”

Opponents Mario Sarchet from Peter’s Jewellers, in Blackburn Road, Accrington said: “I am very disappointed.”
