POORLY revellers — who were initially thought to have inhaled the legal high nitrous oxide at a town centre nightclub — had taken other drugs, police have said.
After warning of the dangers of legal highs in the aftermath of the incident, officers have now said it is “highly unlikely” that nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — played any role in three people being taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday.
Of the three, two told police they had taken MDMA, while the other admitted taking LSD.
Police have also contacted Bolton Council urging them to review La Spatule’s licence, on the basis of crime and disorder.
Det Con Pam Chandler, of Bolton Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Two of the people had taken MDMA and one had taken LSD.
“As far as we are concerned it is highly unlikely that the laughing gas had anything to do with their condition.
“In terms of any drinks being spiked, no investigation will be pursued.”
Some tubes used to inhale laughing gas are understood to have been found on the floor of the club, which led police to initially believe that a bad reaction to the substance was the reason for the trio being taken ill.
Nitrous oxide is a non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odour and taste, commonly used in surgery and dentistry for its anaesthetic analgesic effects.
Possession of the drug is not illegal.
A hearing reviewing La Spatule’s licence agreement will take place at Bolton Town Hall on Wednesday morning, the council said.
