AN armed gang held a family prisoner in their own home — while they ransacked the property looking for cash and valuables.

It is understood the five men, carrying hammers, barricaded the couple and their two children into one of the bedrooms, and stole their iPhones, iPads and a silver Tag Heuer watch, before making off in the family’s two cars, a silver Mercedes 220 and a grey Mini.

The family were at their home in Cox Green Road, Egerton, when the men forced their way into the house through the back door on Sunday night.

They threatened the family, including their two children, and demanded to be shown the safe.

Police arrested four men, aged 18, 24, 25 and 31, from the Tonge Moor area of Bolton, on suspicion of robbery the same night.

Det Insp Charlotte Cadden, from Bolton North policing team, said: “You only have to look at the threats of violence the intruders made towards the family, to see that they are determined and dangerous criminals.

“I would urge members of the local community to reflect on how they would feel if this had happened to their children and strongly consider helping the investigation, by calling us directly or ringing Crimestoppers.

“I understand members of the community will be experiencing a mixture of shock, anger and anxiety.

“We have a team of experienced officers investigating the robbery and would ask anyone who has concerns to approach a local officer who will be happy to speak to you.

“We have arrested four men in connection with this incident but we are still appealing for the public’s help."

Shaun Williamson, who lives in Cox Green Road, said: “I was in the area at the time and was shocked to hear this.

“A lot of residents I have spoken to do not even know what has happened and I’m surprised the police have not told them.

“I feel great sympathy for the family and what they must be going through.”

Police were called to Cox Green Road at 9.30pm on Sunday.

Both stolen cars have since been found by police, and all four men have been bailed until October 9.

Mr Williamson added: “This has upset the community and all the people that live on the road.

“It is shocking and appalling that this has happened. I know plenty of people who routinely leave their back doors open here.

“You have to think that this has been well planned, with it taking place at night when it was quiet.”
