'Shocking' new figures show babies and toddlers taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with alcohol poisoning

DOZENS of babies and toddlers have been taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with alcohol poisoning, according to ‘shocking’ new figures.

Data obtained by the Lancashire Telegraph showed at least 25 children under the age of five have attended the emergency department with possible alcohol poisoning since 2009, including several aged under a year old.

Only a handful of cases were serious enough for the child to be admitted, but the figures prompted health watchdog Mohammed Iqbal to call for a ‘root cause analysis’.

The numbers were revealed in data released by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust following a Freedom of Information request for alcohol-related cases at the Royal Blackburn.

Data showed 3,873 patients of all ages admitted with alcohol poisoning, or mental and behavioural disorders due to use of alcohol, in 2013/14, which was up 16 per cent from 3,331 cases in 2009/10.

Coun Iqbal, deputy chairman of Lancashire County Council health scrutiny committee, said: “These shocking statistics reveal some deep rooted issues that need to be addressed.

“There needs to be some detailed work to look at the causes of this.”

It is likely that the youngest children were suffering from the effects of their mother drinking alcohol while they were still in the womb.

Coun Azhar Ali, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at the county council, said: “This information is tragic and sensational in that it points to the true picture of the effects of alcohol, and we need to stop brushing these problems under the carpet.

“This is why we are pushing for Lancashire to be one of the first areas of the country to introduce minimum alcohol prices.”

Given the comments in the article, It simply serves to show how out of touch these so called experts are. Poverty, disenfranchised, financially distressed, Lack of opportunities, a welfare system that is designed to starve people into the low paid jobs. I could go on but I hope there is a starting point in there somewhere.

I don't know what the answer is. I don't think a minimum alcohol price is going to have any effect. People know the dangers of drinking whilst pregnant. People also know to keep alcohol out of a child's reach.

Maybe we need to tackle the "It doesn't refer to or won't happen to me" mentality people have.

One can only assume the thumbed down comments come from those who support giving alcohol to children and are just apathetic - couldn't care less in other words - or just don't get it.

Its down to the parents to actually PARENT their kids. To act responsibly. Etc. Nowadays it seems, though, most are in some form of addiction rehab or wandering town centres, can in hand, kid or kids in tow. So, what chance do kids get in that environment? Little to none.

Instead of love most are given a can or bottle to swig from. Or cigarette or worse. Kids then grow up thinking its okay cos their parents gave them it. If you don't like my post I don't care but it means you just don't care or simply blind to what many see or know already. If you think it's 'okay' to give your kids alcohol then, maybe, you ought to think why you had a kid in the first place. I mean no one made you buy it did they? No one forced you to? So, up to you then?

'Ere ya go little Chelsea I've got me mates coming round so here's a kebab and cheap cider from Morrison's I got ya as a treat, instead. Go be quiet outside somewhere so I can be with me mates. Be a love.'

I live near a family whose mother is a strong alcoholic and the absent father a drug addict. Not surprisingly, they are the biggest source of anti social behaviour in the area. Its a large family so the older kids look after the younger ones when the mothers probably sleeping off drink. Seems to be all the time. You can just tell when they've had some alcohol. Everyone knows in fact as it makes them worse. Much.

If you want to see what some call 'broken Britain' you don't have to look far.

What next? Reports of kids being sent to places like Inspire in large numbers?

Who are you targeting with minimum unit priced alcohol? you are hitting the responsible drinkers. Alcoholics will just commit more crime and their kids will just have less food and clothes. The booze runs will increase like they used to for organized smugglers. Do these so called experts never learn. Has this got something to do with religion looks like it the government looked at this and had the brains to realise it would target the responsible drinkers and not the addicts.

Under the picture it say's 25 in a year yet in the article it say's since 2009. Yet what it fails to mention is that at a guess there will be more than double that for banned substances. If drink becomes more expensive than drugs they turn to drugs instead of drink. At least with drink the abusers have paid tax towards their treatment.

How wrong you are. How do you know what ethnic background the children mentioned in the article have. Think you will find many cases of parents drinking and taking drugs in all walks of life. Only this week in the papers there was the case of the cocaine taking child beating woman from Scotland although no longer following her faith was born and brought up a muslim. Also a quick read of this web site will show people of all colours and creeds drink take drugs and commit crime .
