A CLARETS fan living in New York has joined an internet celebrity craze where people pour buckets of ice cold water over themselves for charity.

Dan Bentley, who moved to the United States a year ago, was filmed doing the challenge with his wife Kari on the roof of a building overlooking the city.

The former St Theodore’s and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) student can be seen wearing his claret and blue shirt but was speaking in an American accent during the video.

The Ice Bucket Challenge sees people nominate each other to pour a bucket of ‘freezing’ cold water over their head to help raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease, also known as ALS.

The summer craze has been hailed as a huge success by the charity.

Earlier this week, the ALS Association announced that it had received £9.3m in donations since June – compared to £1m during the same period in 2013.

Chelsea captain John Terry used the away dressing room at Turf Moor to join in with the fundraising craze that is sweeping the nation.

In a video, posted online, Terry was filmed in his shorts in the showers at Turf Moor after Monday night’s 3-1 victory for his side in Burnley’s return to the Premier League.

After thanking Stylian Petrov and Ashley Cole for nominating him, Terry pours the freezing water over himself, before nominating teammate John Obi Mikel, former teammate Ashley Cole, and his former Blues boss Rafael Benitez.

Those nominated are supposed to then film themselves having a bucket of water poured over their heads within 24 hours, otherwise they are asked to donate money to the charity.

Singer Justin Timberlake, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and model Kate Upton have also taken part.

What a wonderful idea!

The majority of councillors and their leaders in the area where we live could provide much needed cash and publicity for the many worthwhile causes within their own particular area if they would take part in what has become a very popular pastime. I would be more than happy to contribute towards the many worthwhile causes in my area if my council leader and her leader here in Blackburn would participate in an ’Ice Bucket Challenge’ for charity. I’m sure it would be very popular and help local charities especially.

Far more worthwhile and enjoyable than a lottery ticket!
