Summary

  • Thousands of students all over Bolton are getting their GCSE results today.
  • We'll be speaking to some of them and getting pictures.
  • We'll also give you the full list of schools' results as we get them.

6:32pm

That's all from us today, folks, although there may be more stuff in the next few days. Thanks for joining us.

5:36pm

BOLTON School pupil Iman Orths gave the performance of her life when she achieved 10 A* and two As.
The singer, who has performed for BBC Radio Theatre, said: “In the run up to the exams I turned down some singing opportunities to concentrate on my exams, and it was worth it.
“I have been nervous in the last two weeks and have really happy with my results.”
Iman, who is going on to the sixth form to study A-levels, added: “I am now already pursuing my singing and will continue to do it.”
This year, 29 per cent of all GCSE exams sat at Bolton School girls’ division were graded A*.
Headmistress Sue Hincks said: "We were interested to see how the GCSEs would turn out, now that there are no modules or coursework elements and we were delighted with the girls’ results. The percentage of A* grades remains very high and the value added scores of each individual girl are impressive."

5:07pm

CANON Slade’s high achievers have celebrated outstanding success.
Headteahcer Canon Philip Williamson said: “In addition to achievements on GCSE courses many students performed magnificently on other programmes of study such as BTEC and ASDAN courses.”

5:07pm

KEARSLEY Academy celebrated an increase in the numbers of pupils achieving the benchmark from 51 per cent last year to 52 per cent this year.
Nigel Jepson, head, said: “Results at Kearsley Academy showed further improvement with 52 per cent of students gaining five-plus A*-C passes including English and maths.
“This builds further on our academy’s astonishing 20 per cent leap last year.
“These fantastic results, even better than last year’s, are the best results ever achieved by the academy.”
The school said there had been a record number of A* to B grades.
Successes included 16-years-olds Alfie McDermott with 11 A* to C grades, including an A* in maths and an A* Distinction in iGCSE maths; Jade Ainsworth, Megan Booth gaining 10 A* to C grades receiving A’s and B’s in English and maths, with Joe Kinsella also gaining 10 A* to C including English and maths, with A grades in both.
Emily Clarke gave a stunning performance with 10 GCSE A*-C including English and maths, receiving a Distinction* in music and a distinction in Performing Arts.
Emily is continuing at Kearsley Academy sixth form to study Level 3 Music Theatre.

5:07pm

EMMA Kirkpatrick could not help but jump for joy after she found out she achieved four A*, four As and two Bs.
The 16-year-old Little Lever High School pupil said: “I’m so ecstatic, I worked extremely hard and quite a lot was depending on these grades.
“I am going to Turton School to study philosophy and ethics, politics and government and music.”
Assistant headteacher Dominic Wilkes said: “In addition to consistently high quality teaching in lessons and positive attitudes to learning from our pupils, we have provided them with extra revision classes, motivational events and assemblies.
“We rewarded pupils regularly, including ‘Carr’s pasty Friday’, when pupils who had performed well in the previous week received a pasty.
“We congratulate every one of them, and wish them well in all they do in the future.”

5:07pm

BRIGHT young things at Turton School have celebrated an outstanding year.
Headteacher John Porteous said: “As well as achieving record results, they are champions of Bolton in several different sports, fantastic musicians, scientists, artists and creative talents in subjects from technology to graphics to drama.
“I must put on record my gratitude to all the staff and parents at Turton School who have guided the students through their time at school.”
Leading the way were the head and deputy head boys and girls — Ross Smith, Ben Cartwright, Alice Finn, Amy Howatson, Lucy Ainsworth and Ryan Farnworth — who scored an incredible 58 top grades between them with Ross and Ben gaining 14 A and A* grades each.
Other high flyers included Joe McPhillips, Ben Cormer, Jacob Bewicke and Kat Hamer who all scored 11 or 12 top grades.

Girls left boys standing in this year's GCSE results, widening the gap between the sexes in the top grades.

The statistics show that 73.1% of girls' entries scored A*-C compared with 64.3% of boys', up from 72.3% and 63.7% respectively.

But boys are closing the gap at the very top, with 5.2% of entries scoring an A* compared with 8.1% of girls', a difference of 2.9 percentage points, down from three percentage points last summer.

Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment at Buckingham University, said he was surprised at the results as he believed that the change to end-of-course exams would favour boys.

They tend to do better in those tests, whereas girls' results rose with the introduction of modular testing.

"I was expecting more change this year than has actually happened," he said.

"I was expecting the end-of-year exams to kick in but it is probably going to take some while for the new arrangement to bed down."

In the core subjects, there was wide variety in how well boys and girls did.

In the sciences, boys closed the gap on girls in chemistry and biology at A*-C but could not catch up in physics as both saw their scores rise by the same percentage points. But at the top A* grade boys closed the gap in chemistry and physics while falling back in biology.

Girls widened their lead over boys in English and English literature, both at A* and A*-C.

Boys widened their lead in mathematics at A* level but in the wider A*-C the girls closed the gap.

3:28pm

Students are dropping separate science GCSEs to ease the "burden of assessment" caused by the introduction of end-of-course testing, an exam board head said.

All three sciences recorded double-digit percentage declines this year, with biology entries down by almost a fifth (18.6%), and chemistry and physics faring little better, at 16.8% and 14.6% respectively, AQA chief executive Andrew Hall said.

It is the first time the subjects have recorded a fall in 10 years.

He said students studying the three disciplines separately were now having to do 12 exams and assessments at the end of the course because of the change from a modular system to one set of final exams, as ordered by the Government.

Instead, they were increasingly opting for the Additional Science and new Further Additional Science courses, he said, which spread fewer exams over the two year course.

The CBI called the figures for separate sciences "deeply disappointing" and warned they were potentially "catastrophic for the long-term health of the economy".

Here's the picture nationally:

The proportion of GCSE exams awarded at least a C grade has risen, official figures show, amid early indications that some schools are seeing turbulence in results this year.

Just over two thirds (68.8%) of entries scored A*-C, up 0.7 percentage points on last summer, according to statistics published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).

But the overall A*-G pass rate has fallen for the second year running, and is down 0.3 percentage points to 98.5% from 98.8% in 2013.

The proportion of entries awarded the highest grade has also fallen slightly, with 6.7% gaining an A*, down from 6.8% last year.

It is the third year in a row that this has dropped.

The rise in A*-C grades is the first increase in three years, and comes despite massive differences in this year's English and maths results, both of which are considered key subjects.

In total, 61.7% of English entries scored a C or higher this year, down 1.9 percentage points from last summer.

This is believed to be the biggest drop in the qualification's history.

Maths saw an opposite result, with 62.4% of entries gaining an A*-C grade, up a massive 4.8 percentage points on 2013.

Exam chiefs suggested that there were several reasons for the hike in maths results, including a decision that in England, only a teenager's first attempt at an exam would count in school league tables.

This may have meant that fewer lower-performing 15-year-olds are taking maths GCSE early, and bright students, who may have taken the qualification early in the past, are now sitting it in the summer, JCQ said.

In recent years there had been a growing trend towards schools entering pupils for exams early, or multiple times, but the new rule has changed this, and figures published earlier this year showed around a 40% drop in early entry across all subjects.

JCQ also said that the fall in English grades could be down to strong candidates taking advantage of a final opportunity to sit the exam last winter, and a switch by students to take an International GCSE (IGCSE) in the subject.

The statistics show that the gender gap has widened at grade C and above this year, with 73.1% of girls' entries scoring A*-C compared with 64.3% of boys'.

But boys are closing the gap at A*, with 5.2% of entries scoring the top grade compared with 8.1% of girls', a difference of 2.9 percentage points, down from three percentage points last summer.

The figures released today revealed a move away from children studying the three sciences separately, the first drop in 10 years.

All three sciences recorded double-digit percentage declines, with biology entries down by almost a fifth (18.6%), and chemistry and physics faring little better, at 16.8% and 14.6% respectively.

The JCQ said this was down to factors including a move to end-of-course exams and the introduction of Further Additional Science, which covers the same course matter and counts as three GCSEs.

This was taken up by more than 21,000 students. Entries for the combined GCSE science exam entries fell by 16.9% from 451,433 to 374,961, sparked by a 34.4% haemorrhage in the number of 15-year-olds being entered.

The number of entries among 16-year-olds rose by almost a quarter (24.4%).

This has led to a 6% increase in A* to C grades because those delaying taking science until 16 are "generally not high-performing candidates", the JCQ said.

In languages, Spanish was the only one of the three traditional languages to see an increase in entries, with German and French both dropping.

But they did not cancel out a 16.9% rise across the board in language entries last year.

Michael Turner, director general of the JCQ, said: "There has been a significant amount of change to the system this year and although UK level figures are relatively stable we expect more schools and colleges to see volatility in their results.

"The extent of this volatility will depend on how much change from their usual practices they experienced and how they adapted.

"Entry patterns are very different this year. We have seen a dramatic decline in the number of entries from 15-year-olds, which is largely due to a change in the school accountability measure, where a candidate's first entry counts in performance tables, and the move to end-of-year exams in England.

"As we would expect, where the change in entry patterns is greatest, such as the sciences, English and maths, we have seen some impact on results.

"But despite these changes and the potential for increased centre volatility, candidates can be confident that standards have been maintained."

In an open letter to schools and colleges, the JCQ said that those institutions that had traditionally made use of the winter exam season, entered pupils early, or made greater use of resitting are likely to have seen the greatest changes in results this year.

AQA chief executive Andrew Hall said that the biggest impact on exam results this year had been from schools not letting students sit exams early, whereas before they could sit multiple times from 15.

Maths and science were among the subjects most likely to be sat by 15-year-old students under the old regime, he added, with those subjects' results affected this year accordingly.

He said: "What I think is really of note is the change in the 15-year-old results overall. What is driving that is the 'first result counts'. Only the students who are really strong in the school's judgment are being entered at 15, whereas before they were being entered to see how they get on."
