This is the national picture:

The A-level pass rate has dropped for the first time in more than 30 years, according to official figures, while the proportion of exams handed the very highest grades has risen.

A decision to scrap the January exam session, which has cut the chances students have to re-sit papers, coupled with a move by students to opt for traditional subjects favoured by universities, is likely to have had an impact on results.

In total, 98% of exams scored at least an E this summer, down by 0.1 percentage points - the first time it has fallen in 32 years.

Just over one in four (26%) of exams were awarded an A* or A grade, down 0.3 percentage points on last summer.

The proportion of A* grades rose to 8.2%, up 0.6 percentage points on 2013.

Boys out-performed girls at A* grade for the third year running, with 8.5% of boys' entries attaining the top mark, compared with 7.9% of the girls, according to the official data, published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).

Exam board bosses said the decline in pass rates could be fuelled by more students deciding to take "facilitating subjects" - traditional subjects often favoured by top universities - even if they are less likely to perform well in them.

Why does this make the news every year? Do people really care what strangers get in their exams?

Some people get pleasure from other people's success, some, like you, maybe, don't. If you've nothing positive to say say nothing, simple! ;)

Good luck to everybody getting their results today especially our son and our nephew, but I cannot find Bolton sixth form results on the internet. Have they not been printed yet?

I think everyone should shout from the roof tops their positive achievements and receive the plaudits... We pay for the education system so its nice to see positive results.

Djorkaeff's right peg says...

Education is a basic physiological requirement to be able to eventually self-actualize. Every child has the right to an education but there is a fine line between an academic education and a successful career and they do not always go hand in hand. Given the current climate, there is a huge deficit in the number of post-graduates and potential employment choices that are applicable to those candidates within their respected field of study. It is also a case of square pegs and round holes in many cases.

So many post-graduates will struggle to find suitable employment but this should not deter anybody from wanting to achieve great things in life and education is one of the fundamental factors in doing it.

Education is not a financial burden, but a vital necessity.
