A DARWEN school that has been through a rocky patch has been told it is ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors.

St Peter’s Primary School in Darwen was given the ranking after an inspection earlier this year.

It comes during Vicky Weddle’s first year as headteacher following a turbulent time that saw previous head Michelle Tracey suspended amid concerns over her leadership.

Mrs Tracey’s departure was confirmed last September and Mrs Weddle took the reins, first as acting head, before taking on the job full time.

And Ofsted inspectors praised Mrs Weddle as the school’s improvement continued.

The report by David Byrne said: “Decisive and strong-minded leadership by the headteacher, supported by resolute governors and staff, has resulted in good improvement since the previous inspection.

“Teaching has improved and is now good. As a result, all pupils achieve well and progress is increasing rapidly.

“The very large majority of parents would recommend the school to others and applaud the improvements under way.

“The school is well-placed to move from strength to strength.”

Mrs Weddle announced her appointment by telling the Lancashire Telegraph she wanted St Peter’s to be the best school in Darwen.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted and would like to congratulate all our staff and pupils for their hard work.

“This is a good end to a very difficult 18 months but this is what the school deserves.

“The Ofsted report says there are outstanding features to this school and we have made a lot of changes this year as we strive for perfection.

“Now we just want to push on and get the school to outstanding where it really belongs.”
