A BURNLEY cheerleading group have danced their way to victory at the European Championships.

Girls aged nine to 12 and 16 plus from Clarets Cheer and Dance, based in Hammerton Street, beat nine teams from countries as far-flung as Germany, Poland, Russia and Slovenia at Manchester Velodrome on Sunday.

The ‘minis’ came away with first place, becoming the European ‘street cheer’ champions, and the seniors came in second place in the same category.

Clarets Cheer and Dance also entered a Mini Duo and Seniors Duo which were placed third and fifth.

Coach Sophie Boyle said: “The girls have been training hard for two months for this competition and fundraising for new UK-themed uniforms.

“The standard was amazing from all the teams in the competition.

“The girls have worked so hard for these amazing results and really deserved them.

“They performed the best I’ve ever seen them on the competition floor and were in floods of tears when the results were announced at the awards ceremony.

“Everyone had an amazing day and really enjoyed themselves, which is what competitions are really all about.

“The results are just a bonus, which I am still in shock about.

“It was also great to see teams from all over Europe perform and it was an honour to be part of the UK team.

“The team couldn't have done this without the support of our amazing parents and helpers, coaches and everyone that helped make the day.”
