HUNDREDS of mourners packed into Overdale Crematorium to pay their respects to a Bolton man who died while on holiday in Turkey.

David Burke — known as Burky — died aged 50 in the coastal town of Marmaris while on holiday with friends.

The exact details of his death are still unclear but it is thought he died on the first day of his trip.

His family say a post-mortem examination revealed “multiple injuries”, while a fall at a hotel was the cause of his death, according to Turkish media reports.

His funeral yesterday was so well attended, some well-wishers, who had been asked to wear bright clothing, had to wait outside during the service.

Father-of-one Mr Burke, who most recently lived in Bromwich Street, Bolton, had his body committed to “One Last Love Song” by The Beautiful South.

His coffin was draped with a cross of St George and four Vespa scooters formed part of the funeral procession as a tribute to one Mr Burke’s passions.

Jean Longworth, who led the service, said: “The one thing that we have in common is that at some point, to some degree or another, our lives have touched the life of Burky.

“So we have gathered to express our thoughts and feelings and help us find some comfort. We are united in disbelief.”

She added: “We have come together to give thanks for that short life, for his love, for his friendship and for his humour.

“It is because he was such a presence in our lives that we feel so sad.”

An inquest into Mr Burke’s death has been opened and adjourned at Bolton Coroners Court, with a pre-inquest review scheduled to take place on August 29.
