CHILDREN across Bromley Cross got into the swing of summer — and Wimbledon — with free tennis lessons at their schools.

All five primary schools in Bromley Cross were visited by tennis coaches from Bolton Arena for lessons, organised by community group Egerton Park Improvement Committee (EPIC).

And the youngsters will be able to put their new-found skills to the test at a family open day at Egerton Park tomorrow (Sunday) as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend.

Amy Towen, vice chairman of EPIC, said: “The feedback so far from the sessions has been great, the children have really enjoyed it and they have been really excited about it.

“It’s about giving the kids the chance to enjoy tennis, have fun and make the sport accessible for them — the younger children were given big rackets and big balls so they are able to play a game and have a go.”

Children from Eagley Infants, Eagley Juniors, St John the Evangelist, Egerton Primary and Walmsley Primary of all ages were given coaching in time for the start of Wimbledon.

Bromley Cross councillor David Greenhalgh, also a member of EPIC, added: “I’m absolutely delighted all the schools are taking part in this wonderful initiative.”

The tennis open day takes place between noon and 4pm at Egerton Park this Sunday with sessions for infants, juniors, adults and families.

There will also be the opportunity to sign up for further tennis lessons at the park.
