SIX more adult bones have been found as workmen continue to excavate the grounds of Blackburn Cathedral.

Pipe layer Karl Grant and digger driver Paul Coulson, both from Padiham, discovered half a skull, two infant coffins and three adult caskets containing two small child bones and 18 adult bones between Friday and Wednesday.

The bones were from one infant and three adults, dating from the early 1800s.

The workmen also discovered 15 buried gravestones, including famous Blackburn family names.

Blackburn Cathedral archaeologist Graham Keevill revealed that by the end of last week six more bones had been found, all adult.

All the bones will be decently reinterred in the sacred Cathedral grounds and the gravestones displayed in the new clergy court and cloister garden due for completion by the end of next year.

The remains were left behind after the original medieval graveyard was decommissioned in 1858 by Queen Victoria and the bodies were removed to the new municipal cemetery on Whalley New Road.
