A MAN who went out to watch a boxing match on TV ended up in a fight of his own.

Blackburn magistrates heard Gary Yates, 43, was involved in an altercation with two men outside McDonald’s in Accrington.

And when a police officer who had just finished his shift intervened, Yates lashed out at him.

Yates, of Arthur Street, Clayton-le-Moors, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour and assaulting a police officer. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and fined £165 with £105 costs and ordered to pay £100 compensation to the officer.

Angela Rossi, defending, said the officer became involved to prevent Yates from taking a beating.

“Two men set on him and he ended up on the ground being kicked,” said Miss Rossi. “The police officer, who had just finished his shift, identified himself and was trying to help.”

Miss Rossi said Yates was restrained by the officer and a member of the public but was upset by how he was restrained and lashed out.
