CLITHEROE firefighters have been out raising awareness of road safety.

Crew members took to the town centre to show off a car in which a teenager from Simonstone lost his life in 2010.

Matthew Alston, 18, lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa in Whalley Road, Read, and crashed into a Seat Toledo travelling in the opposite direction four years ago.

The former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil was pronounced dead at the scene.

Matthew, a former Simonstone Primary School pupil, had just finished his A-levels at Clitheroe Grammar and was preparing to study international business at a North-east university.

Two off-duty police officers were in the other vehicle but escaped serious injury.

Firefighters hoped the crushed car would have an impact on revellers as part of their Road Safety Awareness campaign.
