YOUNGSTERS staged their own mini World Cup — as they took on the teachers at St Peter’s and St Paul’s RC Primary School.

The school held a Carnival World Cup Day to celebrate Brazil 2014 and kick off their new learning topic — Brazil and the World Cup.

Children in all years — and even the nursery youngsters — took part wearing carnival colours and waving flags.

The school has also been decorated, including displays on Brazil.

The party started at 1pm with the official World Cup song and a zumba dance.

And in the the afternoon, the lessons had a World Cup theme running through them.

Assistant headteacher Louise Bates said: “The children were so excited and enthusiastic. It was a great way to kick off or Brazil and World Cup.

“All the children dressed up carnival colours with different year groups wearing different colours.”

And as is often the case in crucial World Cup deciders, the match went to penalties.

Mrs Bates added: “The score was 2-2 and it went to penalties, so it was quite tense.”

And while football pundit Alan Hansen once famously said 'You never win anything with kids', the year six team proved him wrong, beating their teachers 3-2 in the shoot-out.

Mrs Bates added: “They went crazy. They did a full lap of honour around the pitch after we presented them with our own World Cup trophy. It was a really good day.”
