COME ON ENGLAND: Blackburn pub set for big screen World Cup fun

This Is Lancashire: Darren Heggie with his big screen Darren Heggie with his big screen

THERE will be World Cup fun by the lorry-load at one Blackburn pub.

Landlord Darren Heggie, 35, is aiming to build on the success of four years ago after buying and modifying a lorry trailer into a big screen for the five-week tournament.

Father-of-two Darren, who has run the Havelock Inn for almost eight years, purchased the trailer for £700 and spent a further £1,500 transforming it into a big screen.

The wooden screen has now been erected and painted with special projector-friendly paint.

Last year, the pub hosted a big screen but had to use scaffolding to keep it in place and struggled with lighting issues.

It attracted around 600 people per game and Darren is hoping to repeat that success this time around.

The pub, in Havelock Street, is also set to be draped in a 45ft by 12ft England flag for the duration of the tournament.

Darren said: “It was a great success four years ago and I’m hoping to build on that this time around. We had some issues with it last time, including the light, but we have sorted that now.

“The flag for the front of the pub is currently being finished and it should be ready in time for the first game.”

Children are welcome to attend but not for the first England match which starts at 11pm on Saturday, June 14.

The media seem to think that everyone is excited by the World Cup. I for one am not (as are several people I know). Football is no longer a sport but a way that pre-madonnas can play around and get millions for doing it. It has become obscene when you think that millions are finding it hard work to exist.

I recently started to enjoy watching football and the World Cup is my first World Cup I will be seriously interested in.

What lets it down is the salaries and the excuse for fans to get drunk in pubs leading to other things.

Apart from that COME ON ENGLAND !

Well done Darren. You obviously have plenty of vision and know what your customers require. The pub game is tough and if some showed your commitment , there would be less boozers shutting. How can anyone post negative comments? Beggars belief. Just give credit to a landlord with some enterprise, who wants to provide a social facility within the community. :-)

I find it strange that people need to directly attack the hobbies/interests of somebody else.

I'm not the biggest football fan in the world but I am aware many people are and I think this truck looks like a fantastic idea and I think it's great that a pub can think outside the box (football pun intended) and survive through hard times for the local boozer in general.

I think everybody who has took the time to moan about football here should list their hobbies and interests so we can see if we approve.

Also as for the argument about how much footballers are paid this all comes down to the fans. If the fans didn't pay the ticket prices, buy the merchandise, buy products from the sponsors etc the footballers wouldn't get paid the money they are.

The simple fact is a good player, a winning team can bring in the fans which brings in the money which in turn could help the team grow and bring in more players / money. A footballer is nothing more than a walking advertising campaign, and nobody bats an eyelid when millions are spent on advertising.
