PAMPERED pooches put their best paws forward at a charity dog show on Sunday afternoon.

About 125 dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds strutted their stuff in a number of categories all vying to become top dog.

There were prizes for Best Small Dog, Best Large Dog, Best Puppy, Best Retriever of a Sausage and ‘Scrufts’ — Crufts for canines that aren’t quite as well presented.

The show was arranged by Friends of Turton Tower, an organisation which raises funds to keep the tower open to the public.

Almost £1,000 was raised from the event, which also saw archery, a home-made cake stand and various local charity stalls including the Bolton branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Crowthorn Animal Sanctuary in Edgworth.

Treasurer Grainger Nelson said: “The whole reason that we have done this is to raise money for Turton Tower, which has been under threat of closure for quite some time.

“It was a fantastic event which saw 125 dogs take part.

“The funniest event was the retrieve a sausage category — I think this was the first time in five years that a dog has actually retrieved it and not eaten it first.

“The cake stall was really popular — I think they raised £400 by themselves.”
