A PRIMARY school has been praised for turning around its fortunes and being rated as good by inspectors.

St Peter’s Primary School, in Whitefield Road, was previously rated as satisfactory in its last report but were labelled as “good” when Ofsted visited on March, 27 and 28.

Inspectors said that senior leaders had worked “tirelessly” since the last inspection in March, 2012, to improve the quality of teaching and the achievement of pupils.

Mr Steve Wedgeworth, the school’s headteacher who arrived in January, said: “Everyone at St Peter’s is absolutely delighted with this report from Ofsted.

“It’s a testament to the hard work put in by the school’s staff, governors and pupils, with the support of parents.

“This is a happy school where high standards are being achieved, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure that this success continues.”

The school was described as “welcoming and caring”, and stated that the achievement of pupils in reading, writing and maths is good.

Ofsted noted “exemplary” relationships between staff and students, and said that pupils were respectful and polite. They reported that staff set high expectations for pupils of how to behave, and that as a result pupils’ behaviour was good and at times outstanding, which was a strong influence on how well they achieved.

The report stated that pupils are proud of their school, and that levels of attendance and punctuality are above average.

Pupils said they found lessons “fun”, and that they like learning about exciting topics which allows them to use their IT skills to uncover new information.

Pupils told inspectors that they felt safe and well- supported at school, and parents agreed.

Inspectors said the school was not yet outstanding because teaching does not consistently challenge the most able pupils enough, and that parents are not fully informed about how they can help with their child’s learning at home.
