A SCHOOL in Blackburn has been found to Require Improvement in a recent inspection.

St Antony’s in Shadsworth Road was said to have seen inconsistent marking but maths was said to be well taught.

Since a previous inspection flagged up problems with literacy at the primary school, pupils’ reading and writing skills have improved, but Ofsted found they are still not good enough Previous problems with attendance however had been said to be resolved.

Inspector John Heap said: “Pupils who require extra help with their learning are progressing well. They receive good support and this is leading to better outcomes. Pupils who receive free school meals are eligible to receive extra funding and support and are just a little way behind their in-school peers in reading and mathematics.

He added: “The quality of teaching requires improvement because there are still some inconsistencies in the way that pupils’ work is marked. The quality of marking is improving, but not at the same rate in every classroom. Mainly, the marking does not provide pupils with a clear enough picture of what they need to do next to do better and learn more.”

Ofsted said leaders needed to do more to evaluate teachers’ work. The school was said to succeed with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage who “settle well, enjoy their learning, and make good progress.”

Pupils’ behaviour was also described as thoughtful and respectful. The school was also described as successful in competitive sports.
