OLYMPIC medallists The Brownlee Brothers have added their backing to The Bolton News’ Sign Up To Save Lives campaign.

The siblings have spoken out after they teamed up with Warburtons Bakery for a campaign encouraging children to take part in sport.

The Half & Half Term Games campaign has been launched today (MON) to celebrate a summer of sport ahead of the Commonwealth Games and help families become more active.

The triathletes have worked with the Bolton bakers to compile a week’s worth of family activities, inspired by their world class sporting experiences, for the May half-term holiday.

After Alistair and Jonathan’s gold and bronze win, respectively, at London 2012, the pair are the first brothers to be together on the podium in an individual sport at the Olympic Games since 1908.

The sportsmen also backed The Bolton News campaign Sign Up to Save Lives, which urges people to sign up to the organ donation register, ahead of the Transplant Games this summer.

Alistair Brownlee MBE said: “We support the Sign Up To Save Lives campaign.

“After the success of the Olympics in 2012 we wanted to inspire children across the country to get active and the campaign is designed to give them ideas as to what they can do.

“It doesn’t have to be anything competitive — you can have fun in your back garden. We always used to play together in the woods near us. It doesn’t have to be expensive such as at the gym. It can be running, jumping in the garden — anything.”

Talking of their childhood, Johnny added: “We would compete over anything when we were growing up, whatever we were doing, especially mini golf. We’d even compete when we were playing board games.

“I think you need that element of competitiveness to make sport fun but it also motivates people to do their best. Plus it’s an important life skill to learn. Learning discipline and the fact that you don’t always win will set you up for life.”

Megan Harrison, brand and portfolio director at Warburtons, said: “With research highlighting that almost one in five parents are likely to eat more healthily as a result of high profile sports events — we hope that the Brownlees’ family favourite activities will help mums and dads provide a healthy and active lifestyle over the Half-Term.”
