A PLAQUE in memory of fallen firefighter Stephen Hunt has been unveiled at the spot where he tragically lost his life while tackling a blaze.

Wreaths were laid by Firefighter Hunt’s family and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's County Fire Officer, Steve McGuirk, this morning before his colleagues listened to The Firefighter's Prayer and fell silent in memory of their colleague.

Mr Hunt, aged 38, died from the injuries he suffered while tackling a blaze in Manchester City Centre in July. He had been living in New Road, Radcliffe, and was based at Philips Park fire station in Manchester.

The ceremony was held on Oldham Street and was attended by the family, his watch, County Fire Officer Steve McGuirk and representatives from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority and Manchester City Council.

Mr McGuirk said: "Shortly after Stephen died his colleagues asked if there was some way we could mark the spot where Stephen fell.

"They felt it would be nice to have somewhere where his family, his friends and the public of Greater Manchester could remember what happened and that someone gave their life on behalf of the community.

"We felt it was a fantastic idea and were able to enjoy the support of Manchester City Council, who helped us install and unveil this plaque today.

"To bring this to fruition in just a few months shows the strength of feeling from Manchester City Council and the wider community of Greater Manchester towards Stephen.

"I would like to thank Manchester City Council and the elected members of the Greater Manchester Fire Authority for giving us their support."

The plaque, unveiled by Mr McGuirk, reads: “The plaque is dedicated to the memory of Firefighter Stephen Hunt “Who lost his life fighting a fire in this building on Saturday, July 13, 2013 “Serving the community he loved.”

A memorial service for Firefighter Hunt will be held on Sunday July 13, 2014 at St Ann's Church, St Ann's Square, Manchester at 2pm.
