Bulldozers move in on Blackburn's Jubilee House

This Is Lancashire: Jubilee House on the site of the former gas works which is being developed as the Cathedral Quarter Jubilee House on the site of the former gas works which is being developed as the Cathedral Quarter

DEMOLITION work has begun on Blackburn’s Jubilee House as the Cathedral Quarter development continues.

The office building, built on the site of the former gas works, was the home of Blackburn with Darwen Council’s voluntary services and charity Nightsafe.

Once the ambitious project is completed, where Jubilee House currently stands will be the car park of the new adjacent hotel.

The work is the final stage of clearing the central area of the town centre for the construction of the £30million Cathedral Quarter.

Once completed, the complex will include two office blocks, a 56-bed Premier Inn hotel, clergy buildings, and a cloister garden.

Work is also well under way on the new £5million bus station at the bottom of Ainsworth Street.

Some people have more money than sense, don't see who will use an hotel in the centre of Blackburn. Unless it's for the homeless.

Have you ever tried to get a hotel room around Blackburn? Unfortunately for most, particularly mid-week it is very difficult due to high demand at both the Premier and Travelodge at Darwen Services and the other at Fernhurst.

Blackburn had a need for affordable quality hotel space, which Premier and Travelodge both provide; even better that this hotel will be in the centre of town to take advantage of the facilities town centre has, compared to being stuck out in the middle of nowhere, like the existing establishments are.

I totally agree but still town centre needs resturants, winebars & more choice in shops.& I dont mean another kebab resterant or takeaway. I mean something in the middle I.E Cafe Rouge. Carlucios & shops like Whistles, Jigsaw, Hobbs, Sandro, Reissto name just a few. These brands are not top notch but not cheap & nasty either. They are g8 in the sales as well so its not always out of reach for everybody to shop at these type of storesTheres not many shops I would choose to buy from in the towm centre Maybe Pandora, Body shop, Debenhams beauty counters & Brand Alley & Tk Max but thats out of the way :( Its a real shame. Im still
hoping. At least they are trying to smarten the place a bit though Lots of people very negative which is sad.Its lovely to hear somebody being positive about the future of Blackburn town centre :))) xxx

Blackburn is the only large town without a hotel in city centre in UK and many of the civic visitors to Blackburn been sent to Dunkenhalgh hotel in Clayton Le moors Hyndburn Lancashire. This new regeneration of a hotel in town centre and the new bus station will bring more economic prosperity and much needed jobs for Blackburn.
I would have like the old Police Station and magistrate courts at Northgate been converted to a hotel and a new Magistrate court should be built around Duke Street .
