Benefits cut man sent threatening letter to Blackburn job centre

This Is Lancashire: Benefits cut man sent threatening letter to Blackburn job centre Benefits cut man sent threatening letter to Blackburn job centre

A 49-YEAR-OLD man delivered an abusive and threatening letter to the job centre after his benefits had been stopped.

Blackburn magistrates heard the duty manager felt ‘fear and alarm’ because of the language used and the mention of a knife.

And police who investigated had concerns for John Wright’s personal safety after they found a note to his landlord saying he had left because of problems with his benefits.

Wright, 49, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to sending a letter conveying an offensive message. He was given a conditional discharge for six months.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said the letter contained comments of a racial and sexual nature and a reference to a male member of staff saying he would ‘stick a knife in his growling head’.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had never been in trouble before. “He was late for an appointment at the job centre and as a result was disqualified from benefits,” said Mr Taylor. “As a result of them stopping his benefits he lost his home. He had no friends or family to support him and vented his anger in this letter. He wants to assure the court there will be no repeat of this in the future.”

This man must have been at his wits end, I hope the people at the job centre start treating people with a little more respect and understanding. for being late he loses his home, some sentence that is, I doubt if a court would be so severe. I just hope IDS and the rest of his Tory supporters are happy with their clampdown on the unemployed.

This case is going to set a dangerous precedent, that is going to come back and bite the DWP staff, with claimants kicking off, if after they tear themselves away from Jeremy Kyle, they are kept waiting to sign on, a minute later than they ought to be. For it is written, 'They that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind'....
Or even, in future, there are going to be an awful lot of mobile phone alarms going off in your local jobcentre, to remind the staff, that they are supposed to be doing a job of work, rather than standing around, chatting!

the job center will hide behind the defense of thats what the rules say... and have nothing to do with the fact they have killed that man... mentally and emotionally, and might still cause his literal death as well. I will hold the Job Center fully responsible if that becomes the case.

Its also worth pointing out that the government says you need 73UKP or theres about to live and survive on.... if they reduce that then how the hell are we supposed to live?

What a very sad situation - a lot different than in the 1970's when I worked in the labour exchange as it was called then. Yes there were folk trying it on but you were told to treat folk with respect as you don't really know their circumstances. Of course there was also supplementary benefits as well as flat rate benefit and you had to prove your costs to get it. We also had staff who made surprise visits to folk at home and that was a good idea too as sometimes it was obvious that a person could not possibly manage or sometimes it was obvious that a person was getting things he/she was not entitled to.

According to some people and the government. poor guys like this are called scroungers.
I can't wait for the day when those who are forcing people into poverty and made to go hungry are made to stand up in court and explain themselves in front of a judge. Never going to happen? Don't hold your breath. History has a habit of repeating itself and those who disagree should take a look at what happened to the last lot who said if there is no bread then let them eat cake.
The jobcentre staff are under pressure to sanction peoples benefits. It's one of the ways this corrupt government are manipulating the unemployment figures.

I'm not going to condone what this man has done, but I do have some sympathy for him.

He lost everything just for being late for an appointment. Sanctions are being abuse by the DWP and the coalition govt. No doubt some DWP staff will hate the new regime, while others, mostly sad inadequate misanthropists, will feel empowered and behave like little Hitlers.

BTW: I gladly pay my taxes and NI for a society that provides a safety net, however, I resent people being treated so cruelly by an unforgiving Kafkaesque system that treats people like dirt.

No it doesn't but people who have been unfortunate to find themselves unemployed and experience Job Centres can empathise with the man. Like others have said if he was an immigrant he would of been treated better and unfortunately that's true.

I've been in quite a few actually throughout my life but I've always behaved in a manner that befits the civilised and democratic society we live in (regardless of what you think, we do actually live in one).
Never once did I feel that sending a letter threatening to stab somebody in the head because of my circumstances was an option. Yes it's very unfortunate that he was dealt with in the way he was but I can't sympathise with him. There are routes of appeal without resorting to criminal acts.

It's nice to see some of us not using the usual words towards each other, but finding a common bond, in the hatred of being abused and repressed by our elected governments.
Finally, after years of segregation, social engineering and false information, people are waking up to the fact that they are being manipulated from above and that injustice stalks this land.
Their very near, God given rights, are being eroded, to a point where they have none; where once freemen are being slowly broken under the yoke of the oppressor. Where Justice is dispensed, according to the size of your wallet and the poor have no right to expect it.
Rise up, I say, rise up and throw off those chains that tie you to ceaseless toil until the day you drop dead. As John Wilkes Booth infamously said, Sic semper tyrannis and Wolfy Smith after him, Power to the people!!

This weeks Anarchists Anonymous meeting has been moved, due to financial problems with the Landlord, to phone box on Northgate, and will be held inside, if wet, at 7pm on Tuesday. Car parking is available on all the yellow lines in the area. And remember Dave, it's members only!

So the guy has one appointment every two weeks and can't manage to get there on time, sounds like a real prospect! The staff at the Jobcentre have to deal with Smackheads and Alkies every day coming in and reeking of god knows what kicking off because they've spent their benefits on day one and want more. I'm not saying this guy is one of them, but they have to take threats seriously, an impulsive reaction, I could sort of understand, but to go home, write a letter, buy a stamp and put it in the post box threatening to attack someone going about their lawful business is unacceptable, I'd have given him a job, folding sheets in the prison laundry, at least he wouldn't have a lame excuse to be late! Absolutely vile racist scumbag (and No, I don't work at the jobcentre)

Taking to the streets and protesting outside jobcentres would be a good start. I also agree with you AnthonyUK Jobcentre staff should not be threatened no matter how badly they behave. I also know there are jobcentre staff who are disgusted at the way they are forced to deal with claimants by this corrupt junta.

When i was unemployed i had my benefits sanctioned for not attending an interview at the jobcentre. I was on a course organized by the jobcentre at the time. Either i got sanctioned for not attending the course or i got sanctioned for not attending the interview.
The ex policeman that was running the course at Accrington college offered to intervene on my behalf , but i refused his offer of help for fear of the jobcenter staff making things worse for me later on. From previous experience i knew how vindictive certain individuals who work for the jobcentre can be..

Whilst correctly outraged at the way this man has been treated, I think many of the commentators miss the point.

The sanctioning of claimants is not merely the vindictive actions of some socially challenged Dole worker. Sanctioning is a punishment for being poor.

Let's be clear. Jobcentres are not there to get people jobs. The primary role of Jobcentres, and the dross that work in them, is to get people off benefits. Jobcentre advisors cunningly befriend claimants under the pretence of' 'helping' them find work. The onus is solely on the claimant to prove they have been 'actively' seeking work. One man who applied for 6 jobs one week and 4 jobs the following week was sanctioned. His crime was .... his Jobseekers agreement stated 5 jobs a week. He was deemed to have broken his agreement on the second week.

Sanctioning is institutionalised harassment of the poor and vulnerable. As is the attendant forced 'voluntary' work and Mickey Mouse courses. This harassment is demanded by the business class to keep wages down and workers exploited.

I believe that there will come a time when the Jobcentre dross will have to answer for their behaviour along side their collaborators at ATOS.

The plea of "I was only doing my job" won't help them.

Unemployed and low waged workers unite to fight back!

I love all the 'blame this, blame that' comments.

He has already shown poor time keeping, perhaps he is the one to blame for being unemployed?

If people put as much effort in to looking for a job as they did in blaming other people they would soon find work. I have found three of my friends a job already this year by CV tweaks, a clear job plan and lower expectations. The jobs are out there, you just need to stand up above everybody else and you aren't going to do that while you are too busy blaming others!

And to balance out all the negatives I will get above, here are some tips that have proven to work.

Make more than one CV: The qualities and strengths for a shop will be different than a factory and an office. Make a CV to fit the job you are applying for.

Email companies that aren't hiring: Walk down an industrial estate or retail estate making a note of company names, go home and email them. Just say you appreciate they aren't hiring but you like the company and would like them to hold your CV for any future expansions. I still get emails now from when I did this 3 years ago when the company I worked for went bankrupt.

Be prepared to travel: Too many people I know refused to look at jobs more than 5 miles away. Have a look at bus routes if you don't drive and make a list of towns you can get too and the earliest time you can arrive, you will be surprised!

Use online CV helpers, forums and friends to polish your CVs (because as above you should have more than one). You have to make an impression from one A4 side of paper, it has to be 100% perfect and this point can't be stressed enough. You should be tweaking your CVs all day to get them perfect!
