A DOG show, fairground rides, and popular children’s characters are some of the attractions of a family fun day set to take place in Bury inspired by the memory of a baby girl.
Lagan’s Foundation is staging a Family Funday and Carboot at Burrs Country Park following the success of last year’s Party in the Park to raise money to help “heart families”.
Lagan Katherine Anne Grant, daughter of Carren Bell and Barry Grant, lost her fight against a heart condition when she was just 15 weeks old in April, 2011.
The foundation set up in her name is the UK’s only charity dedicated to providing help to parents in their own homes, whose babies are born with congenital heart defects (CHD) and/or have feeding difficulties.
Money raised will pay for the training of volunteers at Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool, where a consultant is a trustee of a charity.
Miss Bell, a former Derby High School student, said: “Last year we raised £2,500 and this year we are hoping to raise lots more.
“It is family fun day with lots going on with attractions and there will be food and people can also book pitches for the car boot sale.”
The event will take place just days after the third anniversary of Lagan’s death. Since it was formed, the foundation has helped thousands of families and placed dozens of volunteers who can help offer practical support to families.
Miss Bell, who lives with her family — including Ceridwen, aged 11, and two-year-old Lochlyn — in Horwich, said: “It is always emotional and difficult at this time of year, and this year I am feeling it even more.
“I just want to help families so they do not go through what I did — I slipped through the net and did not get the visits I was entitled to by the community teams.
“Now because of the work of the foundation, some consultants are ensuring the help in the community is in place before babies like Lagan are discharged.
“Charity volunteers can help families access the support they are entitled to and ask questions.”
The Family Funday takes place on Sunday, May 4, running from 9am to 3.30pm.
