FINAL-whistle clashes between a section of Burnley and Middlesbrough fans were quickly contained outside Turf Moor.

Away supporters had provoked some anger when a minute’s silence – for the 96 who died in the Hillsborough tragedy 25 years ago – was interrupted with persistent cheering and clapping.

Police removed at least one supporter from the cricket field stand, and it is believed that ill-feeling resulting from the incident flared outside the ground at full-time.

Inspector Illya Mohammed, of Lancashire Police, said “There were a few little flashpoints after the game, involving a few Middlesbrough fans.

“But we had poilce officers there within minutes and the crowd was quickly dispersed. The number of arrests made is not significantly different than usual.”

Later one fan, Alexandra Perschino, said online: “Cannot believe how disrespectful all the Middlesbrough fans were not observing the minute’s silence for the Hillsborough victims #disgrace.”
