A WILDFLOWER meadow is set to be created on ‘underused’ land in the middle of south-west Burnley to kickstart a regeneration programme.

Several partners are uniting to transform the outlook for users of the Stoops and Hargher Clough recreation ground next Tuesday from 1pm.

Profitts Investing In Communities will lead the wildflower sowing exercise, which will run until 3pm, as the first stage in rejuvenation plans for the patch off Venice Street.

Martin Profitt, from the organisation, said: “This event is the first step in injecting colour and interest into what was once a derelict and underused site.

“Children and families will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of wildlife and diversity before scattering their seeds. It’s been a long time coming.

“This project will certainly benefit local people and I hope there is a good turnout.”

Future plans for the recreation ground include a new toddlers’ play area, multi-use games area, youth shelter and bike riders’ practice course, with funding coming from housing landlord Calico, the Veolia Environmental Trust and Lancashire Environmental Fund.

But the improvements have only been made possible through a joint effort by Proffitts, Burnley Council, Lancashire County Council, Stoops and Hargher Clough Community Association and Cog Lane Residents Association.

A working group is still looking to secure future funding for more enhancements.
