WORK to transform one of Burnley most iconic buildings into an apartment block is ‘well under way’ according to developers.

The former County Court in Bankhouse Street, which has been derelict since 1986, is covered in scaffolding as builders work to convert the site into eight apartments.

Ms E Kasur of South Street, Rochdale, was granted planning permission last August to refurbish the 12,000 square foot building. The building, erected in 1908, retains most of its original brickwork alongside a wooden beamed ceiling, staircases and a Royal coat of arms above the main doors.

In a statement, Ms Kasur said it was her intention to ‘restore this building and retain its original look, making it a showcase feature aesthetically to the local area’.

She added: “The development would contribute to sustainability in terms of location, design, energy and use of local materials and labour.”
