POLICE are urging residents to be vigilant after an increase in burglaries.

It comes after homes were targeted in Clitheroe and Clayton-le-Moors.

Det insp Eric Halford said that between March 1 and 25, there had been 10 burglaries in the Ribble Valley town, compared with none during the same period in 2013.

The burglaries happened in Balmoral Avenue, Primrose road and Chatburn Road during the night or early morning.

The officer said: “Items stolen during the offences has varied and the offenders do not seem to be targeting any specific type of property as up to now they have taken jewellery, computer equipment and power tools.”

In Clayton-le-Moors, burglars have been targeting residents’ car keys then stealing their vehicles from outside.

Det insp Halford said: “The offenders are taking advantage of people leaving their doors unlocked or their car keys within easy reach of the letter box.

“This month alone we have had six similar offences to this in comparison to none this time last year.

“As such we would urge people to be vigilant and make sure they lock their front doors, even when they are at home.

“It only takes a second for someone to reach in and take your keys from the hallway.

“I would also urge people to ensure they keep their car keys well away from the front door area.”

The detective added: “We would also appeal for anyone who has been offered property for sale in the street, at their door or in local public houses to also come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
