FAMILY safety is currently under the spotlight in Bury to look at the common causes of accidents and to offer practical advice on how to reduce the risks.

Parents and children have been taking part in Family Safety Week, which ends tomorrow, addressing some myths around health and safety.

Developed by RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), the event’s themes include home safety for pre-school children, water skills for older children and helping learner drivers, together with safer commuting for adults and preventing falls for older people.

Families can get involved by making an online pledge and completing the online accident survey — both of which are at familysafetyweek.org.uk —as well as by passing on information to family and friends.

Jan Brabin, senior road safety officer for Bury Council, said: “Most people have their family’s safety and well-being close to their heart and will do everything they can to protect their loved ones.

“A key element to our work is making sure everyone has access to the right help and information.”

The road safety team will continue to deliver travel-related initiatives through education, training and publicity in order to raise awareness and reduce casualties among all road users.

In particular, officers are involved in the Safe Young Driver scheme, which is being run at Bury’s Evans Halshaw Ford in Crostons Road on April 8 and 9.

The road safety team will also be organising child car seat clinics on July 15 and 17, and further details will be announced nearer the time.
