POLICE are appealing for information after a Nelson mosque was targeted by burglars.

The burglary took place around 10.45pm at the Al-Hira Mosque on Seldon Street, Nelson on March 16.

Police believe that those responsible have used a flat bladed instrument to gain access through the front door whilst a man was alone studying in the mosque building.

A safe containing around £500 of cash in charitable donations was stolen.

When the offenders have tried to force entry to further office rooms they were disturbed by the man inside and made off. It is believed that there were at least two offenders wearing black clothing and balaclavas.

Officers are asking anyone with any information come forward.

PC Carley Gaynor said: “I would appeal to anybody that may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or with any information about this burglary to come forward and speak with Lancashire Police on 101.

“I would also encourage people attending other mosques in the local area to be extra vigilant and to ensure all buildings are secured appropriately at all times.”

“This is a serious offence and I’d urge anybody with any information about anybody they suspect could be involved to contact police in confidence.”
