A security guard sleeping in his flat above a Darwen bar was disturbed by burglars attacking a gaming machine downstairs.

Blackburn magistrates heard the guard armed himself with a metal bar as he went to challenge the intruders.

Steven Taylor, 28, of Hindle Street, and Thomas McClung, 28, of Lightbown Street, both Darwen, pleaded guilty to burglary at Baileys Cafe Bar. They were committed in custody to Preston Crown Court for sentence. Emma Kehoe, prosecuting, said when the security man went downstairs the defendants were attacking gaming machines with hammers and removing the cash.

Police found Taylor hiding behind a tree and McClung in some bushes.

Michael Blacklidge, defending, said the defendants had been out drinking on Boxing Day and were making their way home.
