A CONSULTANT at Burnley General Hospital was shortlisted for a national award that recognises ambitious and innovative ways of delivering care.

Liz Martindale, who works in obstetrics and gynaecology at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, had been selected from about 90 nominations for the inaugural Kate Granger Awards.

Dr Kate Granger is an award-winning blogger and NHS doctor who has terminal cancer. In recognition of her inspiring work, the NHS Employers organisation and NHS England created the awards to recognise compassionate individuals or teams that make a positive difference.

Liz, from Ramsbottom, said: “I was totally overwhelmed by this. It’s such an honour to be associated with Kate Granger who is such an inspiration to us all.

Former trust midwife Sheena Byrom, who nominated Liz, said: “I believe Liz has influenced the culture of ELHT maternity services by going out of her way to support women's birth choices..”

The individual award was won by Dr Sophie Edwards, of the North Middlesex University Hospital.
