RESIDENTS are appealing for compensation after their peace and quiet was shattered by building work across the road.

People living in Queen's Park, Blackburn, have objected following the start of the third phase of a multi-million pound house building scheme.

Twin Valley Homes has received concerns over the noise and dirt pollution created by the construction of a further 18 houses by builders Wates.

But the housing company refused the compensation plea and said most residents in the area recognised that noise and disruption was inevitable.

Pete Johnston, 49, of Sherwood Road, which faces the building site, said: "It's absolutely ridiculous. They have been jack hammering since 7.50 this morning.

"It's like living in a war zone. The amount of noise and dust we have had to put up with is outrageous.

"We have complained to everyone but it's big money and they don't care about us."

Mary Shuttleworth, 74, of Pringle Street, said: "The vibrations are shaking the mirrors. Imagine what they are doing to the foundations of the house.

"We have had to put up with this for two years."

Pensioner Anne Banks, of Pringle Street, said: "It's absolutely terrible. I keep getting migraines and there's nowhere we can go to get away from the noise.

"It's not just the noise but the dust and dirt we have to put up with. We have tried to get compensation but they are not having any of it."

Kevin Ruth, executive director at Twin Valley Homes, said: "We consulted with local residents and tenants about the development.

"And most recognised that noise and disruption was inevitable. Twin Valley Homes feels that com-pensation is not a reasonable or warranted action."

David Galvin, chairman of the Lincoln Road Tenants and Residents Association, said: "Every-one was given the chance to raise questions at a meeting organised by the Tenants and Residents Association and seemed satisfied by the answers given by representatives from the builders and Twin Valley. I've heard no complaints since."

Surrey-based Wates had no comment to make on the matter.
