Rossendale MP calls for ‘definitive action’ over future of Rawtenstall town centre

First published in News

ROSSENDALE MP Jake Berry has called for ‘definitive action’ over the future of Rawtenstall town centre.

Plans for the former Valley Centre site were unveiled by architects yesterday and today (Sat) at public meetings held at Longholme Methodist Church, in Bacup Road.

Developers and councillors have been meeting residents, business owners and traders to discuss their vision for the site off Bank Street.

Mr Berry said: “What we need here in Rossendale is definitive action, not more of these master plans.

“I’ve spoken to thousands of people from Helmshore to Whitworth, and what we need is New Hall Hey to be filled with shops, a commuter rail link to drive more tourism to our area, and our potholed roads to be repaired.”

But council leader Alyson Barnes has accused the Tory MP of political point-scoring, adding that the plans are ‘too important’ to rush.

Coun Barnes said the first new tenant for the New Hall Hey Business Park, which has been empty since being built in 2007, was in talks with owners of the site.

She said: “It’s really exciting to be unveiling the plans for Rawtenstall town centre.

“We, Labour, took over the council in 2011, six months later we had bought the Valley Centre, and within three months of that, we had demolished it.

“In the last 12 months, we’ve been getting a plan together for Rawtenstall, but have been doing that in two phases.

“We want to make sure that we give people the best opportunity we can to have there say on what the town centre should be like for the next 30 years.

“We’ve even had children at St Mary’s CE Primary School and Alder Grange High School modelling what they would like to see in the town.

In response to the criticism by Mr Berry, Coun Barnes said: “This council has achieved more in two and a half years than the Conservatives did in 20.

“This is too important a project to just get on with, and we will take as much time as we need to get it right for the people of Rawtenstall.”

"a commuter rail link to drive more tourism"

Last time I checked a commuter and a tourist are two totally different things!

All a link to Manchester will do is kill the shops (as why would you go to Bank street when you can pop to the Arndale) and bring up house prices bas more city commuters want a slice of the countryside. Sounds great if you own a home but not so great if you want to own one!

It would also kill off the preserved East Lancashire railway line As a preserved railway. It would be classed as a commercial line.

what do you expect from labour around here, just like the empty promises for the guys at smiths who are being made redundant of help with jobs. utter nonsense.

and as for new hall hay and the never ending talks with possible tenants its been going on since they built the place and every year we get told how they are close. here's an idea for any of the councilors who read these pages. don't say anything until its set in stone.

i just hope come next year will straw doesn't get in as it will be back to how it was with janet anderson (someone who's backing will) we'l never see him as he'l be back down london at his day job at the ippr labour run think tank where he's gotten ooooh so much life experience.

for all the pain the tory's have brought at least jake berry moved to rossendale and can be contacted and talked to. last time i tried that with janet anderson i got some assistant as janet was too busy blowing expenses on her home.

and funny how alyson calls the torys for political points scoring but it doesnt take her 2 mins to shout about how she's thrown money at rawtenstall, even though she wont admit she didnt have the authority to use said money on just that one site as it wasn't given to them for that!!!

GAC, everything you say is spot on. Some of us are even more angry. You are very polite about the plonkers who run the council cabinet.
As for Will Straw, well the Labour party is now focusing on its easiest 40 seats. So Jake Berry mat well have a chance. Labour admits its war chest is depleted with the cut in union fees.

you should try living in shawforth or whitworth, yeah we have a town council but they have sod all power or the ability to make anything happen. lcc and rbc both seem to forget about this little part of their patches.

as for labour concentrating on 40 easy seats maybe if they actually had local mp's and not parachute people in they would do better, also maybe use people who have actually worked in the real world and not just in political side jobs like think tanks until the party deem's them experienced enough to get in on the gravy train.
