Bishop of Blackburn backs food plea for needy

This Is Lancashire: Support urged as local demand soars Support urged as local demand soars

LANCASHIRE’S newest Bishop has asked people in Lancashire to remember local foodbanks during Lent.

Lent began on Wednesday and the Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Julian Henderson, has backed an Easter campaign that will ask people across the region to remember those less fortunate and boost donations to the Blackburn foodbank.

School holidays are a challenging time for foodbanks, as the absence of a free hot school meal means that many more families find themselves needing support to feed their children.

Ros Duerden, foodbank manager, and her team have devised a new campaign to meet the increased demand.

Each week during Lent, the Blackburn Foodbank will identify an item it needs and encourage people to donate that item.

Ros said: “Many people are struggling to see a way forward. When they arrive at our door they are weary and struggling to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

“We make them something to eat and drink and, while we pack their food, we listen to their circumstances and help them to identify other agencies where they can find support.

“This approach is working towards our longer term goal of helping people to help themselves.”

Bishop Julian said: “My appointment as Bishop of Blackburn was announced at Blackburn Foodbank because I wanted to send a message that the Church is here is care for all in the community, including the most disadvantaged.

“I wholeheartedly support this initiative and encourage everyone to spare an item a week — more if they can — to boost the Foodbank storehouse.

“If Blackburn Foodbank is too far away to reach for you then please just donate to your nearest one.”

Is Britain a third world country ? no food remember those less fortunate people ? Some people have money for fags at £8 a packet and no money for food .There are some genuine people on poverty like some pensioners and lone parents.
Real poverty lies in Africa ,Asia and South America where malnutrition and disease is rife ,no food no clean water and shelters made of mud and woods.

May your Gods grant you the sight to see how this country throws money at other countries, so that they can squander it on building nuclear weapons, to threaten equally as poor neighbours, as large portions of their populace live in abject poverty.
Please feel free to explain to me how £450Millions in aid is justified to Pakistan. Thankfully, we have ended our £280Millions of aid to India now.

Whilst I accept that there should be no need for foodbanks in this country, given our much maligned and badly managed social security system, there will always be those that fall between the cracks in our society. There can be no excuse for you denigrating those whom avail themselves of it's services. Shame upon you, for even thinking such thoughts.
In fact, in a true sense of spitefulness, I am going to donate an extra couple packs of pasta, whilst I think of you. Take that, you scoundrels!

Yes a nation greatness is also helping your fellow neighbours and other human beings around the world who suffers from hunger disease malnutrition and lack of clean water that exist in Africa many parts of Asia and South America.
Our contribution to Third World aid is only 0.7% of UK's GDP and we spend something like £112.5 billion on welfare every year to help unemployeds lone parents and pensioners in UK.
Do you really want to cut foreign aid budget of just about £3 billion poor hungry people in Africa Asia and South America ?
Pakistan is a poor country with over half of it's people on poverty and has nuclear weapons and India is a superpower and don't need our economic aid but why punished African countries Nepal Afghanistan and South American countries who do not have nuclear weapons.
