Mountain of rubbish dumped in Bolton beauty spot

This Is Lancashire: Rubbish dumped in Gilnow Rubbish dumped in Gilnow

FLY-TIPPERS have dumped huge piles of household rubbish at a Bolton beauty spot.

Council bosses have now launched an appeal to catch the culprits and are working with the landowners to clear up the mess, which has been dumped illegally, as soon as possible.

The rat-infested dumping ground in Gilnow, opposite Queen’s Park, has sparked public health fears after building up over the last few months.

And the rubbish — on the bank of the River Croal near the Mayor Street bridge, off Spa Road — is visible to passing motorists and pedestrians.

Neighbours and businesses have said the piles of rubbish are giving people the wrong impression of Bolton and the Gilnow area.

Amy Bhudia, who owns hairdresser’s The Salon in Mayor Street, said: “We have been here for the last seven years and rubbish has always been a problem.

“It’s not just on the river bank but the street at the side as well.

“When I saw the rubbish on the river bank from the opposite side of the bridge the other day, I was shocked.

“It’s disgusting and I’m pleased the council is finally doing something.

“If they live here then they are not doing Gilnow any favours at all.”

Ms Bhudia added that her security camera will be pointing into Back Mayor Street from now on so she can identify the people dumping the rubbish.

She said: “I just don’t understand how people can dump rubbish like that.

“Especially next to a river, where you are going to attract river rats.

“Once it’s cleared away and someone’s been punished it will stop — unfortunately when people see a load of rubbish like that they think they can get away with chucking something on to the pile.”

Among the rubbish — which mostly seems to be domestic waste in bin bags — is an office chair, settee cushions, a child’s toy car and a keyboard.

Council chiefs have now put up signs, telling people that the discarded waste has been “illegally” dumped and warning people an investigation has been launched with the “intention of prosecution”.

Gary Lucas, aged 57, walks past the waste every day to get to work at the Octagon Theatre from his Heaton home, and was so appalled at the pile that he alerted the council.

He said: “You see the vans going round, saying ‘Love Bolton, Hate Litter’ and yet there are sites like this.

“It’s such a shame as it is a really lovely town but this is a health risk.

“I’ve been making this walk since December 2013 and it has been there since then.”

A resident in Back Mayor Street, who did not want to be named, said: “This has been going on for ages, it is horrible.

“You go out to the shops, or just for a walk in the park, and you always see it.

“It is a horrible thing to have on your doorstep and I hope it gets cleared up as soon as possible.”

A Bolton Council spokesman added: “We take the issue of fly-tipping very seriously and investigate all incidents to establish who is responsible for dumping the waste.

“When we can identify those involved, we instruct them to clean it up, issue fines and ultimately take them to court if necessary.

“In this instance the fly-tipping took place on private land and we are making arrangements with the owners to remove the waste as quickly and safely as possible.

“We are also working on several lines of enquiry to identify who has been dumping the waste.”

Fly-tipping carries a maximum penalty of £50,000.

The main cause of this is due to scrapping the weekly bin collections. Most of the fly tip is household waste. Keeping in mind the amount of packaging we have in this day and age its just not possible to condense all waste into a fortnightly collection. Yes there are other options available ie raikes lane, but i still believe the council need to look into this matter and come with an alternative for to dispose of waste other wise this problem is going to get even worst. I would suggest a walk in skip in all areas of bolton for to dispose of any access waste.

Firstly lets be clear these FLY-TIPPERs are discusting individuals who don't give a second thought to the people of Bolton. Let alone the children who play on the park near by! I have a large family myself and the fortnightly bins are a challenge but I do the right thing and dump my waste down the tip like the vast majority of decent people of Bolton. For once lets not make excuses for the scum who make even more of a mess of our home town

What a load of rubbish The bluetooth, everyone has or should have sufficient capacity to recycle all household waste, it is all about "Mind set" by which I mean applying oneself to the task in hand. Sort out the waste into the different types, flatten all cardboard (All packaging is made out of flat sheets) cut or tear into smaller pieces if needed, then place in the bin all other waste to some extent can be compressed in the same way and deposited in the same way.
Another thing that would help and other people bang on about it every day,is change peoples lifestyles eat and prepare fresh food that comes without all the packaging you refer too.
Also looking at the picture, if that lot came from one house hold for one week I really would worry, plus it as not been deposited one bag at a time, it as been dumped and there is no excuse for that, at all.

It is just laziness, there is no reason why all household rubbish cannot be put into the wheelie bins provided. People seem to be unable to flatten or tear up cardboard boxes so they just dump them ouside usually full of rubbish. There is no need to go to the Gilnow area ,just take a walk down most of the back streets in Bolton .Try Chorley Old Road from Markland Hill Lane down to the Crofters it goes worse the further down you go. Matresses ,broken buggies, washers ,fridges, carpets I could go on . There are a lot of DIRTY LAZY PEOPLE in Bolton.Oh and look at the area by St Peters graveyard on Moorside Ave, rubbish is all the way from the back of the garages in Woodstock right down to the stream.

Unfortunately our beautiful countryside is not immune to this practice. I recently walked along Coal Pit Road off Scout Road. There were 16 blue plastic bags dumped into the drainage ditch that had recently been dredged out. Further along the road near Roscoes tenement there are sheets of laminated hard board, parts of a fitted wardrobe, plaster plastic containers dumped down a picturesque water fall.

On the mast road heading toward the mast, someone has dumped a fridge along with some household rubbish.

Totally irresponsible, with no appreciation or respect for our surrounding countryside.

Fly tipping seems to be 'the norm' in Bolton town centre. I use the Bolton-Wigan train service quite regularly and the evidence is there for all to see. The entire embankment stretch from Bolton Town centre to Lostock (apart from a very small section directly behind the Bolton Council Vehicle Depot) is covered with fly-tipped waste. It definitely creates both a health hazard and a 'Bolton is a sh#t-hole' impression. If the Council genuinely still have enough staff left at their disposable to suitably address large scale fly-tipping then, why aren't they getting on with it??

When will the council learn..... That will be never.

My business rates are high enough without the council slapping us at every turn, the tip should be a free resource for people to take there rubbish too.

As a mater of fact no they are not sufficient enough for a large family. Let's not forget the cretins that dump their rubbish in bins that are less empty via a neighbors residence. Some people CANNOT cut things into smaller piece, and NO they do not get the help because of council cutbacks to care. I know a member of my family who's bin keeps being 'forgotten' by binmen who are supposed to have her name on the list of incapacitated.

And no mater how much recycling, cutting, folding and blinking well jumping on the bin I do - the bins are ALWAYS full to bursting. EVERY two weeks.

We here are in a position where we can take our rubbish to the tip when rubbish is overpopulating the garden. Many others do not have that liberty.

One thing I cannot stand is someone that thinks that they know how every single family lives and thinks in averages. We do not live in a society of averages and single persons so you Burmas cannot state that EVERYBODY has sufficient room for garbage.

The next part you are going to hate if you think that the onus should be placed on home owners and residents to compliment their bins with carefully cut rubbish - for several hours per week - some of us work - have to look after the kids, cook, clean, and are expected to go hell for leather recycling - recycling I might add makes the council profit on our labor. The other thing regarding packaging is that it IS the food corporations overly packaging absolutely everything. There is absolutely no need in our age of technology and shrink packaging that we should be suffering for corporate banner advertizing on packaging - It IS the corporations that should be paying extra levies to the government for recycling costs and garbage disposal - we should not be being ripped of via hefty council tax rises and cuts to services.

Now having said that NO there is no excuse for fly tipping - just do not be so quick to judge. Unless of course your office is next door to fat Cliff's?

Greedy council is the reason for a massive increase in fly tipping. Once a fortnight domestic waste bin collections and a the revenue raising of charging people for getting shut of certain domestic and most, if not all, business waste when these service have already been paid for from our council tax and business rates.

That area of where the dumping has taken place is the furthest place away from a description of a beauty spot as one could get. It's actually a complete dump of a place.

Bolton Council couldn't give a flying f**k about many of the areas of Bolton, this being just one of them.

Try cutting back on waste, we are a family of 4, the youngest being 15 and our grey bin is maybe half full when it is emptied, the other bins have far less.
Maybe they should take away 3 of your bins and just empty the grey one weekly, would that please you ?

Just read thee story - if its fro a company then they ought to be sued, if its individual waste and its become a common dumping ground for many then the Council ought to do something (yes even prosecutions) as Fly-tipping is illegal!!!

But as it is the fortnightly collections DO NOT WORK. In fact where I used to live in The Netherlands we had bin collections twice a week and it wasn't segregated - all waste was placed in one bin and then segregated at the waste plant - cheap and far more efficient!

But as the council has reduced its staff, due to massive budget cuts, what else can one expect - you don't get anything for nothing in this world. Even if it was privatised one would have to pay more than what one does through the Council Tax!

We too are a family who only need to have our grey bin emptied once a fortnight and the reason for that is that we recycle as much as we can. It takes just a few extra minutes per week and of course a change of mindset. The problem with these people who fly tip is that they are inherently lazy and there is probably nothing that anyone can do to alter that. Bigger fines and having to pay for the clean up of their fly tipping might deter those filthy, lazy, arrogant to55ers who get caught. Then maybe they might reconsider chucking their rubbish all over the place without conscience or consideration for those who have to clean up after them.

I don't think it's about making money on recycling it's the landfill tax imposed by government so every ton recycled is a ton less in landfill and a ton less destroying our planet yes the council does get some revenue for recycling but after wages' vehicle cost 'fuel' and logistics it's still a loss. Since refuse went fortnightly collection over £2.3 million has been saved in landfill tax and that money saved can prop up other services.

You keep bleating on that I have this that and the other user names and each time I have proved you wrong!!!

FOR BTYE UMPTEENTH TIME HERE IS THE TRUTH AND HOPE IT SINKS INTO YOUR VACUOUS SPACE WHERE YOU BRAIN IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!!

On this PC I am currently using, it automatically logs me in via my FB profile when I switch the PC on - and this is my BWFC71 profile!

On my other PC, which has websense installed, and as such blocks FB, I have to log on via email address and that is my The Righteous One profile.

BWFC71 has been around for a few years, since I was allowed back after being banned for providing information of Phil Gartside address (which was freely available via the internet anyway).

The Righteous One has been around for about 10 months since I have to use the works software (hence having websense installed). And the same username CANNOT be used for 2 different accounts/registered IP addresses, as I did enquire before asking the team if I could register a 2nd account!!!

I have no use, or inclination, for any other username, which YOU keep insisting I have!!!!

Have you finally grasped it yet or are so such a big idiot???

One ore point - when are you EVER going to comment of the report/letter on which you post? You have never commented on any report or thread but instead you have thrown insults not only to me, but many others!!!

If you are really from Bolton, then I expect to see you at Bolton station (platform 1) at about 0650 tomorrow morning and then you can tell me to my face, in front of many man witnesses, what you actually think of me!!! If you do not meet then I will take it that you are just an internet troll and I will make a compelling case to Julian and the other editors to have you removed from this website.

Millions spent on renovations just down the river, kingfishers returning, herons, swans, two large ponds refilled with fish, nice seating areas: yes, I'd call it a beauty spot. As to the people who cause the waste problem, I believe the apple never falls far from the tree!
Whilst I agree wholehearted about the vast improvement in the area, I fail to understand the analogy. What has the saying about children usually not being dissimilar to their parents, have to do with fly tipping? Or am I missing something?
Apparently of Eastern origin, it is frequently used to assert the continuity of family characteristics. In this case the characteristics being those of the flytippers being the children of the flytippers being the children of the flytippers etc. One might also say that although the area has been polished the tu rds that float around it certainly cannot be so buffed!

Maybe that was what you missed?
You're quite right. Fly tipping is indeed an age old skill almost certainly passed from Father to Son and so on.

What a pity that BN appears to lack the resources and will to actively moderate, blocking and banning where necessary, the more objectionable, childish and illiterate comments in this popular section of it's website. Many threads have degenerated into one to one repetitive and childish name calling, instead of intelligently debating and commenting on the topics at hand. It seems that almost any dull wit with access to Internet can bombard these pages with their stupid and misspelled utterances. Wake up Bolton, we are being made to look so stupid by much of the mindless drivel currently filling the comments section of this website. If commenters were obliged to give and publish their full contact details, as in the old days of newspaper readers' pages, the cranks and morons might be rapidly weeded out, to allow intelligent and thoughtful Boltonians to debate and discuss the local news and issues of the day.

I concur, BWFC71 is pseudo-intellectual. He proclaims to be a connoisseur of life and a citizen of Europe with his vastly superior knowledge of statistics that he studies meticulously. I can imagine him self-gratifying over an encyclopedic mountain of legislation and regulations. He seems to be a very bitter, negative, middle-aged bloke who is no doubt follically-challenge

Definitely not follically challenged - still got o Washington's every 4-6 weeks to have a number2 round the sides and back and a few centimeters off the top (£8.50)!!!

Or when I was living in The Netherlands used to call at Kapsalon Heinekenplein (not quite sure of the correct name) and have the same - directly outside the 16/24 tram stop(€13.50)

Bitter - possibly especially to people who belittle others, actuall comment nothing but abuse to others and don't actually contribute to the story that starts the thread!

Apart from that definitely not frustrated with the world nor uptight - just fight for facts to be used and the removal of abuse because people have different views on everything and facts can make a person cahnge their mind, rather than lies!

I don't think we should blame the mess on the now two weekly bin collections, I thought at first this would be a problem but I now recycle and I still get all my refuse collected and it fits in my wheelie bins ok and I am a busy mum of two and there are four of us living in the house.

People need to learn that tipping rubbish is wrong and that you can find ways of disposing of it properly.

I find people let rubbish accumulate and like some of my neighbours they do not get up in time to put their wheelie bins out so miss the collection then moan about it. Wise up, act responsibly.

Yes I agree some people just don't care. The bin men call at 7:30 but mrs and mrs can't be @rsed don't get up until dinner time 'unless it's giro day so they can go to the post office and spend £20 on scratch cards' fags and cider So what do they do 1.... Pinch some else's bin that has been emptied ..2 leave the bags of rotting food in the back yard.. 3 wait until it's dark and throw them over the fence onto the river bank. Then moan about how hard they are done to. Makes you proud doesn't it.

What I get mad at in my area landlords of rented properties throw all the furniture left by the previous tenant out in the back street and It gets moved after a couple of weeks of looking like a third world country. If I ring the council to remove my rubbish I get charged pounds per item. I have rung the council many times about this and the answer I always get is that we will investigate, this is in spite of it being the same houses time and time again. No wonder they have no money for weekly collections these people are getting there properties cleared for nothing at my expense.
