MARY Berry and Paul Hollywood move aside — the Great Edgworth Bake Off is here.

People took to their kitchens to bake cakes for the village’s first charity bake off, organised by Scallywags Pre-School and held at The Barlow, both in Edgworth.

Twenty-four cakes, created by children and adults, were brought for the competition. Alice Parkinson, aged three, was thought to have been the youngest baker in the competition.

The Reverend Stephen Parsons, the Team Rector for Turton, and Vivien Parsons, his wife, judged the competition.

Kerry Lynch, a committee member of the pre-school, said: “People were so generous. People were putting in £20 notes when they had a piece of cake and some put in £10 to take half a cake home.

“Somebody delivered 500 leaflets the night before the event and someone said they heard the leaflet come through the door at 11pm so attended as they knew it must have been something someone cared about.”

The judges were most impressed by a Victoria sponge made by Mandy Shepherd, who was named as the adult winner. Alice Ryder, aged 10, won the children’s bake off title.More than £250 was raised from the event.

The event was held in aid of Mistletoe for Cancer UK, chosen because a mum of a toddler at Scallywags Pre-School — based at Turton and Edgworth CE Methodist Primary School — has terminal bowel cancer.

Mistletoe therapy can be prescribed by doctors and it can reduce adverse effects from chemotherapy and radiotherapy and improve quality of life.
