A BURNLEY war memorial has been given a makeover by two councillors in time for a special service to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

Gannow councillors Neil Motters-head and Charlie Briggs have restored the war memorial in Plover View, on the site of the former Mount Olivet Baptist Church, which has since been demolished.

The memorial stands at the corner of Plover Street and Broughton Street.

It took the pair just over a day to carry out the work, which involved stone cleaning and power washing, as well as cutting bushes back, laying matting, and gravelling around the monument.

The councillors have also organised a special service of remembrance at the war memorial, which will take place in April, and are inviting the whole community to participate in the event.

Coun Mottershead said: “Me and Charlie did all the work. It took just over a day. We do not mess about."

The two councillors, along with Ightenhill councillor Tom Porter, are inviting residents of both wards to a Service of Remembrance, on Wednesday, April 23, at 1pm on the corner of Plover Street and Broughton Street at the war memorial.

All the churches in both areas have been invited including St Mary Magdalene Church, All Saints/St John the Baptist, Padiham Road Methodist Church and Life Church. The Army Cadets and Veterans Association will also take part.
