A BURNLEY nightclub is set to undergo a facelift which could create 15 new jobs.

Alter Ego, in Hammerton Street, is under new management and will be split into two separate venues — Pure Nightclub and Sugar Lounge —when it re-opens next month.

Bosses at new owners Pure Events Ltd have pledged to spend ‘big money’ on refurbishing the Grade Two listed building.

Eddie Down, a business partner in Pure Events Ltd, said the firm hoped to capitalise on the recent closures of Lava and Ignite, also in Hammerton Street, and Level One, in Bull Street.

He said: “That’s definitely an incentive. It’s left a gap in the market.

“We’re spending big money on decor, a new sound system and a bigger stage area for live acts.

“It’s going to be a big employer — we’re looking at creating 15 new jobs. We’ve had interest from big promoters in Liverpool, Clitheroe and Manchester about starting new nights in March.” Alter Ego opened on the site, formerly Panama Joes, in December 2012 following a £250,000 makeover.

Mr Down, 37, said he hoped the two new venues would offer variety for clubbers in the town.

He said: “We want people from outside Burnley — from Accrington, Blackburn, Bury — to come here, and to stop people from Burnley feeling the need to go to Preston, especially midweek. The main club, Pure, will be for dance and house music, current stuff, while Sugar Lounge will be more about live acts.

“We’re planning a disco night which will be a big feature for us, with an 80s theme.

“We expect it to be very busy.” Interviews for new staff took place yesterday and the club’s grand re-opening is pencilled in for March 7.
